Amazonia Collection: The Sustainable Journey of Handmade Jewelry

Each piece in the Amazonia Collection tells a story that begins deep in the Amazon Rainforest and ends with you. As a curator, my role is to find the pieces that carry that story most powerfully, building relationships with artisan communities across Brazil, and selecting only the pieces that meet our standards for craftsmanship, sustainability, and cultural integrity. Let me take you through the journey that makes every piece truly special.
Where the Materials Come From
The artisans behind the Amazonia Collection work with materials that come directly from the ecosystems around them, gathered responsibly, with deep knowledge of the forest and its cycles.
Seeds, fibers, and natural materials are collected by the artisans and their communities, ensuring the preservation of the rainforest's delicate ecosystem. Wood is sourced only from fallen trees or sustainably managed forests. Nothing is taken that harms the forest.
For the Indigenous and riverside communities behind these pieces, nature is not a resource to exploit but a partner in life. They see themselves as part of nature, not separate from it. This deep connection shapes the care and reverence with which they handle every material, long before a piece ever reaches my hands.
The materials in the Amazonia Collection read like a map of the Amazon itself:
Açaí seeds — collected by artisan communities along the Amazon River basin after the fruit is harvested, cleaned and transformed into lightweight, colorful jewelry.
Jarina (vegetable ivory) — the hard, dense seed of the jarina palm, shaped by the artisans into beads and pendants, as in the Amazon Bloom Jarina Set.
Paxiúba seeds — collected from the walking palm by riverside communities along the Rio Negro, naturally textured and rich in color.
Reclaimed Amazonian wood — sourced by the artisans from fallen trees or sustainably managed forests, each piece carrying its own unique grain and pattern, as in the Reclaimed Wood Necklace.
Natural fibers — tucum, piassava, and buriti palm fibers woven and braided by artisans into necklaces and sets that carry the texture and spirit of the forest.
Freshwater mother of pearl — harvested from river shells and shaped into elegant pendants and earrings, as seen in the Amazonian Mother of Pearl Set.
The Hands of the Artisans
Once the materials are gathered, the artisans begin the work of transformation. Their craft is an extension of their relationship with the natural world, developed through years of practice and shaped by techniques passed down through generations.
Their vision of nature is profoundly different from the modern perspective. While many see nature as something external, to be admired or used, these artisans see themselves as intrinsically linked to it. They are nature, and their work reflects this understanding.
Using techniques refined over generations, they shape, string, and assemble each piece with intention and respect, infusing every creation with the spirit of the Amazon. The Borari Indigenous Beaded Necklace is a powerful example, crafted by the Borari people using traditional beadwork patterns that carry cultural meaning far beyond their visual beauty.
Alongside these communities, the Amazonia Collection also includes pieces from independent artisans across the Amazon, individual makers who bring their own vision, skill, and relationship with natural materials to their work. Each one is selected with the same care and standards as any other piece in the collection.
Every piece is handmade. No two are exactly alike. The small variations in color, texture, and form that you might notice are not imperfections, they are the signature of the human hand that made it.
How I Select Each Piece
My role begins where the artisan's ends. Once a piece is finished, I evaluate it for craftsmanship, durability, and the integrity of its story. I look for pieces that are not only beautiful but honest, made with genuine care for the materials, the maker, and the environment.
I work directly with artisan communities and independent artisans, building relationships that ensure fair compensation for the artisans and a consistent supply of pieces that truly represent the richness of the Amazon and its people.
What reaches you has been chosen with intention, not mass-ordered from a catalog, but individually selected because it deserves to be seen and worn.
A Connection to the Amazon
When you receive an Amazonia Collection piece, you're not just getting jewelry. You're holding a tangible connection to the Amazon Rainforest and its people. Every necklace, bracelet, and earring carries the spirit of the forest and the stories of the artisans who created them.
By wearing one of these pieces, you join a larger story, one of sustainability, cultural preservation, and respect for the natural world.
